Do you need bloodstains to solve additional quests? (Divinity: Original Sin)

I have a question. I am now in the Dark Forest, on my way to the Hunter's Desolation. I have three unused bloodstains in my inventory. Question: do you need to use them on yourself to open portals in the refuge world, or can these bloodstains come in handy when solving quests in the future and is it better to hold them back?
