best ranged weapon

Guys, I prefer ranged weapons in Souls games.
other than the Charleville 1789 shield musket, available from the very beginning of the game, what should you pay attention to?
is it worth saving the materials for upgrading it and hoping to find a cooler fluff as the game progresses, or is it better to improve it right away and score on all subsequent possible options for muskets?
