Impressions of the game Octopath Traveler (Octopath Traveler)
Eight heroes and eight different stories that can be played together or separately.
A warrior, a cleric (two, scientific and non-scientific), a thief, a mage-scientist, a hunter, a merchant (stop, what?) and a dancer (Cho!?) will tell different stories in terms of interestingness and creepiness. The stories, unfortunately, are rather simple, one might even say superficial, presented in a frivolous style. Someone has more interesting banalities (scientist, thief, hunter, warrior, healers), someone has frank crap on the verge of insanity. A dancer with this moronic "faith is my shield", for example. And how idealistically the merchants are presented, this is just epic-level maniacism. Local huckster-villains seem to be the most adequate characters against the backdrop of the heroine. Additional quests are also extremely simple, but there are quest lines that are better. Quests are built on the use of character talents: you can ask NPCs for information about yourself and quests, you can steal / trade (not everything can be obtained by trading, so Tessa is a useless character who still doesn’t know how to open chests, that is, an absolutely useless character), you can provoke a duel and, finally, add NPCs to your squad, so that where - take it away. And, of course, dungeon raids with a cathedral of chests and bosses. The main plot is revealed precisely after the passage of the stories of each character, since they will (who has more, who has less) hints that the stories are interconnected. And if you get to the real secret ending, then the plot acquires a good integrity and scope, revealing itself and becoming very good. add NPCs to your squad to take them somewhere. Management, of course, bottom-console, without a mouse, with a bunch of extra clicks, but at least there is, oh horror, running and autosave, which is already head and shoulders above similar classic games. And a very convenient system of teleportation in cities. From anywhere, just a buzz.
Everything looks great, pixel retro, coupled with modern technologies (such as depth of field) make the game style unusual and antique at the same time. Unfortunately, it looks good only on screenshots, and even then if you don’t zoom in. In the game itself, there are ten pixels on the face, and the same DoF (which I turn off once in any game) lathers so monstrously that it needs to be turned off, but then it becomes clear how carelessly the authors made the backs (but even this is better than with DoF). You can turn on more than 60 fps, but it will become too painful to load the video. In general, the technical condition in terms of appearance and design can be called an attempt to do something new in pixels, but it turned out badly.
In general, I don’t understand why the reviewers licked the game so much, and the authors sold it for as much as 4000 rubles, although the red price for it is 500 on sale. Fortunately, for Russia it has become free, and you can appreciate it if you like JRPGs or pixels.
But simple plots (not about the finale, it's good there), controversial characters and ugly pixelation spoil the game. But he was dancing. Rare non-pixel art and the world map are excellent, the map is generally one of the most beautiful.
