secret underground tunnels (Assassin's Creed 3)

In the study of underground tunnels in Boston and new York found some stone plates that light up when touched. And pointed out some direction I went in both directions but to no avail. Tell me, is this some kind of riddle, or is it just a joke, or a reference to something?

Well illuminated arrows showing the direction to the nearest door. Well it's obvious, no? I went and quickly tried to open the door to a fast move to open, much easier so.
