The Russian car industry!!?? (Overkill's The Walking Dead)

The question may seem strange or silly, but what the hell in the US make Soviet and Russian cars, and in such amount as shown in the game? GAZ-53, Moskvich-412, VAZ 2101, VAZ 2109, GAZelle. I know that in the USA the Russian circuit is present. It is not necessary to sugartit! Just can developed said? WHY? WHEN? WHERE?
