Prevent a nuclear war

This post I want to dedicate to a great man who saved us from nuclear war! Thanks to him we now live and see the sky above! This man's name is Stanislav Petrov Evgrafovich. An officer of the Soviet Union, prevented in 1983, a nuclear war!

A bit of history.
It all started with the fact that three weeks before the incident event, the Soviet Union shot down a Boeing-747 belonging to South Korea. After that could start the cold war. In the command post received the order to employees of the Serpukhov-15 immediately reported to the authorities if you suddenly start missile attack. The decision about a retaliatory strike only took the Soviet leadership.

As Peter himself says, on the night of 26 September 1983, when he was on duty at the command post Serpukhov-15, his computer gave the signal to launch missiles from a US base. But Stanislav yevgrafovich did not immediately sound the alarm and to report to the Soviet authorities about the incident and how it turned out – his act saved us from nuclear war. And all because a Soviet Colonel competently assessed the situation. After seeing that the missile launches (because it turned out that they were not) were produced from a single point and consisted of several ICBMs, Stanislav Petrov decided that this is a false positive.

After the incident with the false positive began an immediate investigation, which found that the sensors of the satellite was illuminated by the light from the sun, and that was a false alarm. Subsequently made changes to the space system that such situations should be excluded.

Of the deed Petrov was silent because of political considerations and military secrecy. The actions of Stanislav Petrov became known to people only in 1993. Then Colonel-General Y. V. Votintsev published a short description of the events on 26 September 1983.

Stanislav Petrov Evgrafovich has an award "Association of world citizens", which was presented to him in the headquarters of UN in new York in 2006, 19 Jan. This award looks like a hand holding a globe. This figurine is made of crystal and it has an engraving with the inscription "the Man who prevented a nuclear war."

In 2012, Petrov was awarded the German media. The award was presented in Baden-Baden on February 24.

Also, Stanislav yevgrafovich became a laureate of the Dresden prize in 2013, 17 Feb. This prize is awarded for the prevention of armed conflict.

Now the Soviet Colonel is retired.

Personally, I wish that in our time there were more people that their literacy actions and save all of humanity from certain doom! I thank him for the bright sky! And no war!
