Discussing the plot (obviously spoilers) (The Executioner)

A hole in the story or I didn't understand something. At the very beginning of the game they say that his father was taken at the age of 10, eight years (!) passed and the trial began over him. How so? During the trial, the assistant says , "who will work?". And eight years before that, who worked?
