clutch replacement - Toyota Celica, 2.0L, 1998

clutch replacement - Toyota Celica 20L 1998

1) unscrew the hub nuts. To do this, you need a powerful knob, a head of 30 or 32 (best deep, because non-original grenades stick out from the hub nut stronger than ordinary ones), a pipe at least a meter long, which you put on the knob and twist

2) we jack the car, put it on two jacks, or better on bricks, hemp, etc.

3) remove both front wheels

4) unscrew both levers from the ball. for this you need to unscrew the bottom of the lever, where it is attached to the hub, two nuts and a bolt.

5) pull out the released hubs from the levers. Each hub now hangs relatively freely on the rack. There is no need to unscrew the steering rods.

6) unscrew the drain plug on the box (it is at the bottom, you need a head for 24) and drain the oil.

7) pull the drive out of the hubs. To do this, move the hub as far as possible towards the rear wheel and away from the car.

8) pull the drive out of the box. The left (short) drive must be pulled out with effort, because it has a retaining ring. The right (long) one must first be unscrewed from the bracket, which is located in the place where it bends in half (the head is 14 for the upper bolt and the key is 14 for the lower one).

9) remove the right and left part of the protection (head 10).

10) jack up the engine by the crankcase

10) unscrew the front engine mount (bolt and nut 17). Do not unscrew the pillow itself from the "ski"

11) unscrew the rear engine mount. A bit problematic, but you can crawl (also a bolt for 17, below there are two nuts for 14 and one bolt for 14, plus another nut for 12 on top)

12) now you need to finally unscrew the "ski". there are two bolts 12 left, where it is attached to the TV

13) we lift the engine as much as possible and remove the "ski". Not easy, but possible. It is necessary to raise the back cushion up, while pulling the "ski" towards you.

14) move under the hood. Remove the air filter box. To do this, we take out the filter itself from it, loosen the clamp on the pipe going to the intake manifold and remove the upper part of the case (do not forget to turn off the sensor on the pipe). The lower part is removed by unscrewing two bolts by 10. It is also held by two clamps on the sides.

15) remove the battery.

16) remove the starter. Hugo is holding two rather inconvenient bolts at 14. You also need to pull out one plug from it and unscrew one nut at 12.

17) unscrew the clutch slave cylinder, for this we first remove the protection from it (two bolts 12), and then two bolts 12 on it.

18) unscrew the bracket from the gearbox that holds the tube from the clutch master cylinder to the working one. We remove the clutch slave cylinder to the side.

19) remove the reverse sensor (on top of the box, in a conspicuous place).

20) unscrew one of the ground wires, also from above.

21) remove the transmission cables. To do this, remove the bracket from each of them (from the wire, just pull it towards you) and the washer. They are also held by brackets on the box, pull out one more brackets (U-shaped, with a bend on top). The cables are free.

22) we pull out the speed sensor, it is in a rather
inconvenient place, under the cables.

23) unscrew the box from the left engine mount (two nuts 14 on top and a bolt 14 on the bottom). To do this, we give the engine a maximum boost.

24) the box is free. We unscrew all the bolts securing it to the engine block (bolts 12, 14 and 17)

25) remove the box.

26) unscrew the clutch basket from the flywheel (6 bolts to 12). Then remove the basket from the guides, the clutch disc will fall out.

27) on the removed box on the input shaft, we change the release bearing. Remember how the old one is attached, sometimes problems arise when installing a new one. Slide it onto the input shaft and insert both ends of the wire bracket under the clutch yoke

28) put everything back together. All the work can be done alone, except for the removal and installation of the box, as well as assembly (put back the drive, pillows and ski). you can install the box together, but if you are doing it for the first time, then it is better with three

29) pour oil into the box. To do this, unscrew the second plug by 24 (filler) and use a syringe (pre-purchase at a car shop, the more volume the better) fill it into the box. there is no level, pour until it flows back through this plug.

only the clutch disc and release bearing can be changed. if there is wear on the basket, then we change it. if there is wear on the flywheel, we also change it. the wear of the basket can be compared to the wear of the brake disc, a bulging rim appears on the worn basket at the edge. the same with a flywheel.

many thanks to Alexander Baranov (Personage) for his help in the work!
