TLC40: evolution: hydraulic booster - Toyota Land Cruiser, 3.0 liter, 1978

It so happened that we have already started discussing the topic of power steering in the previous entry www.drive2.ru/cars/toyota…/288230376151934522/#post
, continue here:

You can ride a magpie without power steering on 32 "-33" wheels. Only it is difficult to turn the 295 BFG AT on dry pavement, and in motion there are no problems.

On the road, the situation changes - there are no problems turning the wheels on the spot (unless, of course, the surface is flat), but when driving, you have to deal with sharp rebounds of the steering wheel and the car after hitting an obstacle the size of a quarter of the wheel diameter (or less if the speed is high).

The intensity of such rebounds, accompanied, if you do not hold it, by a frantic rotation of the steering wheel, depends heavily on the rubber and on the air pressure in it. I have ridden BFG MT, BFG AT, Ground Hawg and Simex Extrem Trekker. The most comfortable in terms of holding the steering wheel is Simex. The most merciless — Ground Hawg www.drive2.ru/cars/toyota…4062246863888253263/#post

If we talk about high-speed moments, then we should name the speed range of 40-60 km / h in which taxiing without GU is quite possible. Above 60, even if the surface allows, I tried not to drive - there is a high probability of losing control due to a sudden bump, stone or log.

And, of course, my favorite exercise, turning on a patch in my own rut - this is where it gets tough. Not just tight, but you lose as much strength as you have and a little more, and therefore, instead of active movement after such a turn, you come to your senses for a while. And this is also the time.

In general, to put the hydraulic booster was a mandatory item for me for a long time.

What options did you consider:

Option 1
Find exactly the same gearbox as I have, only with hydraulic boost.
Toyota has been producing them for very few years. From about 1978 to 1983 (85). In addition to Land Cruisers 40, 60, it was also installed on DYNA and Coaster.

Then the location and shape of the gearbox was changed. The difficulty of selecting an analogue lies in the fact that you need to find a machine with a right-hand output of the steering arm, swinging the lever back and forth, with an offset from the axis of the ore shaft by about 15 cm.
In general, this has not yet been found.
Plus this option:
— Completely native system of levers and tie rods.
- a very convenient location of the gearbox on the frame.

Minus:
— All spare parts must be ordered in advance.
- ?

Option 2

Adapt any available gearbox with suitable rotation and remake the steering linkage.

As a suitable one, you can take any Toyota (and not Toyota) gearbox.

Plus:
- the ability to put the right gearboxes from Hilux, Forunner, 70th series, which are often found on disassemblies
- remake the steering linkage on common components

Minus:
- the gearbox moves forward along the frame and enters the area that was supposed to be cut off
- the tie rods definitely remain in front of the axle

3 option

The now fashionable way to control the front wheels with the help of a hydraulic rack.

Like here:

I thought a lot about this option and find it has a lot of advantages:
- zero effort on the steering wheel
- ease of alteration
- compact steering levers and the possibility of their 100% protection
- low overall weight of the steering system

But there is one big downside:

- as soon as the hydraulic booster is over, the car becomes completely uncontrollable

4 option

A hybrid between the first and fourth: the hydraulic cylinder is installed to help the native gearbox. For example, in place of the steering damper, or on a long longitudinal link running from the reducer arm to the pendulum arm, or ...

Plus:
- all the advantages of the first option are retained

Minus:
- and the minuses of the first option also remain
- it is not known how elements that are not designed to work with GU will feel

While the 2nd and 4th options are being worked out.

Most likely it will be like this:

we have the same TP3 with such a rail, but TP2 also has more speed and easier tasks, so as a variant of the golden seridine, it seems to me 4 options! And there is less to redo and there is a hydraulic booster!

Yes, I also can’t imagine how to toss and turn in a swamp and not feel a backlash. But we have a TP3 champion car with such a rail for the second season. True, I noticed that the most frequent pose of the pilot in the action photo is looking at the left front wheel: "Where is it lined up?"

the best in my opinion options 1 and 4 because how to leave the steering wheel without feedback on the steering wheel is worthless it’s speeds up to 50 km / h I went to the rally without a hydraulic I know what it is when by the end of the extra fingers you don’t feel and you hold a spoon at dinner while you look at it :):) as soon as I forgot about the spoon, it falls out of my hands and the fingers of the gnat started the gnat only in the morning!
but you can’t leave the car without control either! and then the reactive action on the steering wheel is needed at speeds above 60 km / h
, so 3 options are not very good only for trial
, if anything, my personal opinion is not kicked!

... in the picture the steering machine is very similar to 70 (reminded me of my own)

Bogdan, come on.
1 tractor rod, rod running along the frame from the steering machine to the pendulum.
2 due to the shift of the gearbox close to the frame number, we get additional rigidity at the place where the steering gear is attached.
4 It makes no sense to cut the frame much, it's easier to push the base apart. (still cook and cut)
5 if you leave a mechanical winch, the frame is strong and you can’t cut it
6 On a large rubber, the gearbox from the right-handed 80 showed itself well.
and 7 I can’t post a photo here, look in my BZ

1. Got it.
2. Yes, of course.
4. Yes, first of all, we will move the bridge by 10-12 cm, and then ...
5. I really want to leave the mechanics, but I haven’t decided yet
6. I didn’t even doubt it.
7. I look ...

Which option do you not like?

K

Or maybe leave both circuits? Turn off the mechanical one by removing the longitudinal rod, but what happened with the hydraulic rail, put on the rod, tightened the two nuts on the tips and you are on manual control! Bogdan, why don't you like my version? The effort is like that of a hydraulic rail and a mechanic, in which case it works.

O
Odyssey4x4 26.02.22

Eh, it's easy. That's just the mechanical connection must be left.

I'd put a hydro.

"Tractor traction" and springs are not friendly at all. And Bogdan wants adjustable shocks. And you can’t insert adjustable shocks into the spring like in Def, Disco, RR and Land Cruiser II. Only separately. Plus a steering wheel.

then: Kulikoff-Sun
, I did not find a photo of the installation of the g / y. Post it pls. I can't find mine. I don't remember where I dumped it.
