Four-wheel drive, getting ready - Toyota Sera, 1.5 L, 1990

Four-wheel drive getting ready - Toyota Sera 15 L 1990

I'm starting the next stage of modification - to put four-wheel drive on this baby.

The idea of an all-wheel drive appeared almost immediately after the installation of the turbine. The thought was thought over, and put in the queue, because there was no longer a budget for it. Why do I want four-wheel drive? I want to get a relatively comfortable and "balanced" car for city streets.

The conventional concept of "balance" is different for everyone. I want to make the "maximum" configuration, which will be able to realize some, but the existing potential, while not at the expense of daily operation and without looking at the breakdown by class in various amateur auto competitions. Yes, I understand that 1.5 Turbo, 4VD on a stick flies in Barnaul (the closest city to Novosibirsk with a decent organization of drag "pokatushek", Novosibirsk, alas, has lagged behind) in the 3rd grade, in the affectionate hands of Subar, ZhiTiForov, Skylines, etc. .P. cars are really of a higher class. It is enough to leave ambitions for the prizes, and completely surrender to the "creativity" of creating your own car. The drag "cramps" would initially have been built differently, with a minimum of GT28 pipe and throwing out all the excess, starting with the air conditioner.

In general, for me an integral part of the "ideal" is the enjoyment of driving a car. And this was not enough in normal daily use. Long gearbox from Starlet GT (with GP 3.7) + ceramic clutch + heavy 205 / 45R16 wheels in total give very good "combat starts", but getting under way "normally" without undermining the traffic light along with everyone else is just painful. The first step of "anti-tuning" was getting rid of the rigid ring suspension with absolutely hellish coilovers. Yes, excellent stability and handling "kart", but driving them on our roads does not deliver pleasure.

The second step of anti-tuning is the installation of light forging 195 / 50R15. Cera and Ceres changed wheels, how she felt better! This is almost a "normal" car. Minus - in the first two gears it simply smears the Pirelli P5000 DRAGO, which were once considered very good , on the asphalt, even at "city" pressure.

Well, now, it is logical, to compensate the received axlebox with an additional drive to the rear wheels. Additional bonus - GP on 4VD boxes - 4.085. Allows you to move "quietly", without noise and dust, without frightening other road users. At Ceres, now a box with the same GP, it is quite comfortable, the first mechanic on it was with GP 3.7 - and similarly it was not comfortable to get under way, even with a regular clutch, there was not enough moment.

I will not do it myself, a lot of welding works, I will go to Andrey again. Moreover, two months ago they already installed an all-wheel drive on Sulfur, I watched this project. The car remained atmospheric and automatic, the owner wanted only better cross-country ability in winter and summer, but all possible bumps were already full.

The main problem is that there is no and never have been four-wheel drive Sulfur, respectively, all parts are selected from "relatives". However, the wheelbase of Sera is 6cm less than that of Tercel, therefore everything is cut and cooked - both the levers and the universal joint. But the biggest problem was the tank! Neither Starlet 4VD nor Terzel does it come even close, Sera's tank is much lower in height and somewhat shorter, not to mention the "cunning" shape of the upper part. At that time, we were able, with significant modifications, to "pinch" the tank from the 4VD Corolla 100. Along the way, we had to eliminate the "holes" -deepages for the rear passengers, so now there are really only children in that car behind.

This time we will try to assemble the Custom aluminum tank in place of the spare wheel. The space in the trunk will have to decrease a little more ... According to the calculation, the tank will come out by 35-40 liters, which is quite enough for a city car.

In the meantime, components
are being purchased - EL55 manual transmission - 4200r - EXY15
cardan - 3100r
- ECP25 axle - 6000r
- stabilizers front + rear - 1600r
- longitudinal levers 400r each , while 3 pcs

To begin with, the swap lacks a wishbone (Panhard rod) and one longitudinal. And of course heaps of "little things", some of which are already available in the "zagashniki" (such as cups and springs on the 4VD rear axle).

To begin with, I plan to fix Ceres after winter injuries (finally, the insurance has been paid) and in a couple of months I will start the installation.

Thank you
8-)
In the week I will contact the owner of the 4VD Sera, I will check the condition that everything is running stably, if anything has come out. I thought the first Serka would be, but Sanya "skipped" me, well, it's for the best, there will be less experiments on me.

It's funny. But since such a project has already been done before, what can I say --- one can only wish a painless operation and fewer pitfalls. We are following.

Oppa ... Well, yes)) Well, all the same, the eastern wave will go through you first)

I'm not in the Far East, much, much closer, albeit far away, Novosibirsk
:-) There
will be a photo, of course, for history.

Yes, the P5000 is tough, the consequence was that they have little wear and tear. I bought them back in 2004, rode on Ceres. At that time, according to the tests "Behind the wheel" for 2003, it was the best rubber in terms of grip on wet asphalt (both in handling and braking distance) in this size, and on dry it did not lose much to the leaders. Interesting tires, because grip on dry and wet is slightly different.

I never cease to be amazed at YOU! .. Well, you start in the Far East, and we look and catch up someday) I'd like to see a photo of the process.
And the p5000 is really plastic, the winter wheel on dry asphalt at positive temperatures gave the best grip! And they are old, in my opinion a 97 or 98g model ...

and what rear pillars will be? bodykits probably will not fit on the bridge. or am I confusing everything?

Z
Zizo 05.01.21

and the buddies would have come, but I took off the coils last summer
there is a difference between the all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive in the rear pillars, therefore we will "hybrid" assemble
the rack mount at the axle higher than on the beam, so the curved support cup and the rod goes inside the body on the all-wheel drive , well, the support under the spring on the 4VD rack below is
most likely to bend the usual front-wheel drive racks, at the same time the back will rise by 3 centime

Thank you 8-)
When will you post your project here?

by the way, here the person is also going to put on 4VD,
I think you have something to talk about

you, as always, do something ... the idea is very interesting and necessary. I think that with your knowledge it will not be difficult ... but anyway: good luck, and fewer pitfalls ...

Duc ... on most Americans, even the engine is not numbered, only the model and all 8-)

MEDVED79 05.01.21

Toyota does not write numbers on boxes, so. but on the Volga it is a numbered unit.

Z
Zizo 05.01.21

but it is not there anywhere
if you need a specific number (which the GP and the transmission describes) then only those suppliers of contract spare parts save that the engine compartment plate with numbers is also screwed onto the box + engine set.

M
MEDVED79 05.01.21

Hey. tell me where on the box you can see the number?

y
yuri-yakimenko 05.01.21

Thank you very much for such a comprehensive answer. I've been looking for this information for a long time.

Z
Zizo 05.01.21

According to the first, make sure that the box is exactly from 4E or 5E, contractors indicate this, and indicate this much more often than the box model. And the name of the box itself is C55F, but it can also be on 1NZ and other Z-ka. If you are interested in the full index, with an additional code, such as С55F-642, I will not answer right away, but there is no particular sense. These numbers encode the main pair, and it will be 4.048 on all E-shnyh 4VD, and only for 85 Starlet it was 4.3

On the second, in principle, yes. But it will be necessary to twist a lot there, if the colas allow you to remove (underestimate) ~ 70-80mm from the drain, they will stand up. But, usually, an understatement of 50 ends. Actually, how much to underestimate - measure the full height of the support cup for the 4VD rack.

Hello! I have a question) And what M / T boxes are suitable for a 4wd 5E-FE bolt-on, the name is of particular interest. And the second question, the rear coils from the front-wheel drive starlets will fit under 4wd, only they will have to be unscrewed lower, do I understand correctly? Thank you)
