Contract turbines - Toyota Chaser, 2.0 L, 1990

Contract turbines - Toyota Chaser 20 L 1990

Turbo lug. Every owner of a Japanese turbo wash is faced with this. :) This is the effect of the operation of the turbine when it cannot reach positive pressure, since there is still not enough gases at the outlet to spin the impeller to the required extent. The result is that the turbine does not pump air into the collector, but only "mixes" it. It is because of this turbo lag, which can occur both at the start and during switching, the car loses power at that point in time until the revolutions rise again. However, the turbo lag effect is strongly noticeable only on single turbo boost systems. In addition to one turbine, sometimes two are installed :) And there - everything is much more interesting.

My engine has a twin turbo that works sequentially. This means that in the entire engine speed range the turbocharger behaves differently - from 2-2.5k rpm the "lower" turbine works, with 3.5k rpm both "lower" and "upper". Thus, there is practically no turbolag.

However, right now, the lower turbine on my 1G-GTE is dead. Sometimes it goes to positive pressure, as reported by the sensor. But the whistling sound from under the hood and the nirazu not increasing power tell me that "while the lower one presses, oil flies out of the engine through this turbo perfectly ... stop it!" and I dump the gas. That's how we live. :(

But if you allow yourself a little anneal, the revs increase to 3.5-4k rpm, the upper turbo is connected and the car literally shoots out. This is where you feel, as many say, "kick in the ass" :) Nice feeling. Especially pleasant in contrast rides-does not go :)

But then my torment came to an end :) Contract turbines arrived from Vladivostok. They took them off the same engine as mine - 1G-GTE which was on Soarer. His engine rattled, but the turbo remained in excellent condition! One is simply, ideally, the second is a small radial play of 1mm, which, in principle, is permissible, and will not affect the work in any way. Turb oil is not thrown. Let's bet! :)
