Frequently asked question. - Toyota Mark II Qualis, 2.5L, 1997
I often ask in forums and on thematic sites.
- "The suspension knocks on a cold one, then as soon as you go a little quieter."
I myself faced the same situation. What did you do ? And what is the reason?
Did you ask? We answer! Before installing the twin-tube shock absorber on the vehicle, it must be brought into working order.
During transportation and storage in twin-tube shock absorbers, working fluid can flow from the inner to the outer cylinder. In this case, the back-up gas enters the inner cylinder. In this case, the shock absorber will make knocks when working in the car's suspension (this is especially audible in a cold state), and its throttle valves are destroyed.
To avoid damage to the shock absorber, it MUST be brought into working condition before installation. For this:
1. Turn the shock absorber rod down and smoothly, without jerking, squeeze it;
2. Lock the damper rod in this position for 2–3 seconds;
3. While holding the rod, turn the shock absorber upside down, fix the shock absorber in this position for 3–6 seconds;
4. Keeping the shock absorber in the vertical position for the specified time, gradually extend the stem to the end of the stroke;
5. Turn the shock absorber upside down, pause for 2-3 seconds and repeat operation 1, 2, 3 and 4 five to eight times;
6. When finished pumping the shock absorber, following the sequence, stop at point 5;
7. Holding the shock absorber vertically, with the rod up, perform a check operation (by sharp but short movements of the rod, make sure that the piston moves smoothly, without dips).
A well-pumped shock absorber is a smooth piston movement without failures.
After bleeding, the shock absorber should be in the working position, rod vertically upward, until it is fully installed on the vehicle.
Spent 3 hours on this operation, now everything is quiet.
