Prius pros and cons - logbook Toyota Prius 2005

There was another person at the Maverickclub who wanted to smell the Prius. Especially for him, I collected my thoughts, wrote out the pros and cons of the Prius, in order to be objective.
Prius pros:

- low gas mileage (in summer 5.5/100 in the city with climate control on; 4.5 on the highway at a speed of 90-100 km/h or 5.5/100 at a speed of 110-130 km/h)
- minimum taxes (79 hp)
- planetary gearbox. Does not require ATF level control. Stepless gear change. High degree of reliability compared to automatic transmissions, type-tronics, robotic gearboxes. The ability to skid in snow or mud, rocking the car (unlike automatic transmission)
- high build quality, Prius is assembled only in Japan
- high resource of individual units - engine, exhaust system, brake system.
- high dynamics, acceleration to 100 km / h in 10 seconds, high torque 111/4200 N * m
- rich safety equipment: ABS, VSC, TRC, EBD, Break Assist, 8 airbags
- additional equipment: keyless go, JBL audio system with amplifier and 9 speakers, GPS on a large display, Bluetooth with address book and car voice control

Prius cons:

— inability to repair the hybrid part in the conditions of the “Russian hinterland”
— in the event of a serious accident, expensive elements of the hybrid system may be damaged, the restoration of which will hardly be possible on the periphery
— noisy engine operation at high speeds
— poor quality of interior trim materials
— non-standard rubber 195 / 55 R16
- body "for an amateur"
- unstable operation of the engine at idle
- low ground clearance
- the fuel filter is located in the gas tank, expensive and time-consuming replacement
- frequent cases of failure of the cooling system pump
- foot "hand" brake. Constantly dirty.

Now gas tanks are made of plastic, which means there is no rust there, the main supplier of dirt to fuel equipment. At gas stations, gasoline also passes through the column filter, I don’t think it’s so important to change, especially since there was no difference either before or after replacement.
I have a negative attitude to all sorts of improvements, and not only with respect to the Prius, but also in all machines. My slogan is, you climb less - you drive longer! Only the necessary maintenance.

Hmm, I think everything is not so simple here. All Prius problems arise from the fact that someone was trying to improve something, refine it and make it so that the VVB was charged from the outlet.
In general, maybe in fact the fuel filter is not a big problem. I changed it to Toyota Tercel and Ford Maverick. They were there in the "open access" and I changed the filters, again, focusing on the regulations, and not the need. I haven't noticed any improvement since the replacement.

There used to be a lot of complaints about music, it’s already improved in my car, it reads different formats and the quality is good. The radio reception is only buggy in the mountains, but this is already physics, everyone and not only the Prius has such a problem, the mountains create a shadow, and as you know, VHF waves spread in a straight line.
Spikes are simply forbidden in our country, I drive with Velcro, thanks to electronics the car has never skidded (if you don’t turn off your own brains), it slows down on slippery a little strange but stops quickly.
Is it possible to simply bypass the filter in the tank? For example, how to insert it into the fuel line on old cars so that it can be changed without disassembling the entire car. Moreover, such a filter costs a penny.

Winter is already on our nose, I was categorically advised not to ride Velcro, so I took a studded Nokian, on disks. True, a budget option, used tires, but the condition of the tread and spikes is very decent. Let's see how it will behave.
As for the fuel filter - our gasoline is not like in Germany, so many of the consumables (the same candles) fail earlier than it is provided by the manufacturer. The people on the priusforum changed fuel filters, I didn’t go into details, but I got the feeling that this was a complicated procedure with dancing with a tambourine.
Native JBL music is not that bad, it is ordinary and does not pull on a 9-channel advanced audio system. I did not notice the difference between it and the music of previous machines, where there were 4 speakers without tweeters and an amplifier. But the radio in the Prius is really worse. Again, on previous machines, the quality of the radio was comparable to that of a song recorded at 128kbps. And here it is clearly felt.
But this does not detract from the merits of the Prius. Fact.

I did not try to ride in the mud due to the lack of such, but I experimented on snow and ice.
In the mountains, I specially drove into an uncleaned area with deep snow, the car goes like a tank until it stops itself (winter tires without studs). There are no problems to get under way in the snow either, the traction control system does not allow grinding and the car picks up smoothly, although the ABS constantly blinks.
I tried it on ice, leaving the garage with about 30% of the rise. I specially stopped in the middle of the rise and decided to start moving, the car just stands stupidly, the anti-bux does not give.
I think that in the mud the car will behave the same way. You can say — plus and minus in one bottle.
By the way, the fuel filter for almost all new cars is located in the tank along with the fuel pump, and I have never heard of anyone changing it here.
My music is native and quite satisfied, but there are problems with radio reception. Especially in the mountains.
The rest of what you wrote down in the cons I don’t care, you understand why. There is insurance, a telephone, a tow truck, a service.

I doubt that on the Prius it would have been possible to change this filter in 30 minutes, because there it is twisted on top with a ring with a large thread and it can be oh so difficult to get into the thread during assembly, I spent two hours.

Ground clearance is increased by spacers. I didn't, my friend did. As for weaknesses, it is better for you to read specialized forums than to rely on my opinion. I am not an expert. Priusforum.ru, for example. As such, I don’t remember any weak points in terms of breakdowns in the Prius. The device is quite reliable in everything. But it all depends on which generation you are targeting. The 20s seem to be more reliable than the 30s. But they are all old, only second-hand, it will be difficult to bring them from abroad.
