New toy! — Toyota Starlet, 1.3 liter, 1992
Finally, I bought myself a 4-channel Hollywood HV 300.4 amplifier. Now the 2-channel poppy will go back to the sub bridge. Well, some data about the new amp: The Hollywood amplifier belongs to the HV series. This registered trademark does not actually mean "high voltage", but "High current Voltage driven". The shape and color of the case, traditionally for this brand, look somewhat tragic, although, no doubt, it is rich. Power clips Hollywood Sound Labs, contrary to accepted canons, does not gilded, but chrome-plated. As you know, chromium is stronger than gold, as for corrosion resistance ... In a car, let's say, there is plenty of chromium - and what, there are a lot of traces of corrosion on it? RCA jacks, in full accordance with the concept, are also white, and obviously not cheap. It is somewhat unusual that all adjustments by channel groups are divided vertically, and the input jacks are horizontal. That is, when connecting connecting cables, some tension in the muscles of the brain is required. High-level inputs are also present here. Both filters are continuously adjustable, but the range of regulation for HPF and LPF is different. In general, there is some confusion with these ranges. In particular, for the high-pass filter (HP), the specification indicates 15 - 200 Hz, the numbers 15 and 300 are drawn on the case near the regulator, and 80 - 1200 Hz in the text of the instruction. Look at the charts. According to the measurements, it turned out that the high-pass filter has a cutoff frequency range of about 17 to 200 Hz, and the low-pass filter has a cutoff frequency range of 50 to 160. A unique feature of Hollywood: when the low-pass filter is on, the second filter (high-pass filter) is not turned off, and it can be used as a subsonic filter . Usually, however, subtone filters use a slope of 18 dB / oct. and more and here we got only about 12 dB / oct. This is at frequencies below 15 Hz. As the frequency increases, that is, when the filter becomes a regular high-pass filter, the slope of the roll-off decreases to 6 dB/oct. The LPF “floats†the quality factor a little, but the slope of the decline remains equal to 12 dB / oct. The unadjustable boost provides a commendably gentle 10 dB boost at around 40 Hz. The HV 300.4 is the only one among the test participants that managed to overcome the bar of 100 W (at a load of 4 ohms). True, at a two-ohm load, its power grows only by forty percent or so. When turned on, Hollywood gives a small but noticeable "click" (0.43 V (RMS)). The sensitivity adjustment range is quite sufficient for the vast majority of installations. Nonlinear distortion on a four-ohm load is the lowest in the test, but the noise level and crosstalk inspired less. In addition, some problems arose when the amplifier was operated on a capacitive load. There is a noticeable high-frequency generation, and the amplifier's appetite for current consumption had to be severely suppressed by the power source.
