Coilovers, cooking recipe Part 1 - logbook Toyota Cresta, 1984
Let me tell you my story about coilovers. Who does not know, these are essentially the same racks only with more progressive x-kami and the possibility of adjustments in height, compression-rebound, camber, castor.
Now it's time for me to get these things. Due to the lack of living specimens on the yacht with an adequate price tag, I decided to try to do it myself, because it is not structurally difficult, it is only important to know some basic parameters from which to build
To begin with, the iron that was needed:
TRD cartridges - 48511-TA001
TEIN springs - L120-GCC
Screw set for height adjustment
Cusco strut supports + washers
Well, the struts themselves with nuts
I didn’t find the exact numbers from the recipe for 71 anywhere, but I found it on a hachiroku) ... figured it out ...
In addition to this, I took a few of my measurements to finally clarify the picture ...
The length of the stock rack in a compressed state with an understatement of the machine - 530mm
Clearance 120mm. from ground to jacking hole
Let's remember these numbers, let's move on ...
We remove the racks, disassemble ...
We measure cartridges ...
When choosing cartridges, I used the catalog www.trd-parts.ru/list_shock-cartridge.html
It has all the necessary parameters to imagine how much you need to shorten the rack for a specific cartridge and whether to shorten it at all, maybe you just need to put a spacer
New TRD is shorter than stock by 20mm. In my case, it was decided to shorten the stand for a short cartridge by the same 20mm.
We cut off the cups, measure the length of the rack - 420mm in stock
We measure the segment in place of the old cup 20mm. and better 19mm. to tighten the nut a few turns more
Cut out a piece
Having inserted the old cartridges as centering, we grab both parts of the rack to the points and try to insert new cartridges
If everything is smooth and twists without distortions, we scald it completely and clean it
As a result, we have a shortened workpiece 400 mm long
. Everything is clear with the racks, while we put them aside and measure the remaining pieces of iron
Spring length 200mm. Hardness 12kg. It is clear here that with such stiffness the suspension (spring) travel will be no more than 20-25-30mm., We will also take this moment into account
The length of this piece is 110mm, the diameter is 50.8mm. (Toyota)
Excluding flanges and nuts, the working length for adjustment is about 70mm.
Temporarily assembling the structure...
Now I will draw the numbers to which I came by feeling and twisting the little stands, so to speak, live
The length of the rack with a cut piece is 400mm + the length of the rod is 120mm + the height (thickness) of the upper support is approximately 30mm = 550mm., Which is already 20mm higher than our stock underestimated indicator,
plus we take into account the fact that the spring will sag under the weight of the machine by 15-20mm, it turns out those the same 530mm as in the lower stock.
And this is in the maximum raised position, i.e. it will be possible to lower it by about 70mm and get 460mm on the rack and 5cm on the clearance
. Such numbers suit me quite well, so we measure 230mm from the bottom of the rack. and cook...
Of the several options for how to fix a threaded glass, I chose the most reliable one. Cook both top and bottom. We cook with a semi-automatic device with gas, not forgetting to protect the thread
We clean the welds well so that the nuts are properly tightened. Again, do not forget to wrap the thread with something
Now I need to paint the whole thing.
Chose color 8))
great respect to the owner of the paint, without him nowhere 8))
There are no more than 20 photos, so I will post the result of this venture in the second part)
Today I just looked at the yakhe sets of stakes - all of them were killed, tortured! You did very cool!
something Yaha has not been happy with abundance lately. I can’t find spacers for the racks, although there used to be heaps, both with and without collapse
I understand, although I got it cheaper, but in your version the quality is guaranteed, as they say, if you want to do it well, do it yourself :)
IGSW
I got 26. for iron, about $ 850 - $ 900
new cola for such loot even in Japan will be difficult to find
Why didn't you consider used options?
about “more interesting options for this moneyâ€, I apparently got excited
, of course there are options, but I can’t meet this money somehow (
yes, it will be easier for me to drag it through a familiar official representative of the kayaba ... the price tag is almost the same ... and which options are more interesting?
nope, they won’t collapse) On the front end, the collapse does not fall when lowered, yes, the convergence will need to be corrected.
Do you want to drag anything from the Yahi? Newsspecial + Espelier is of course a good option, but I think there are more interesting options for this money
well, there $ 1500-2000 is definitely more budgetary ... by the
way, I was thinking not about cola, but according to the budget Kayaba nu cf hurry with espeliers if it’s also more budgetary, and I don’t need it wildly hard and didn’t want to underestimate much ... BUT I understand I have front wheels fall over? Do you need cups with camber adjustments?
I got 26. for iron, about $ 850 - $ 900
new cola for such loot even in Japan will be difficult to find
And by the way, what kind of budget is this option? significantly less new stakes relatives?
don’t be afraid) the most spectacle is the budget, everything else is solved
if on the topic, then the main point is to understand where to weld a piece of threaded pipe, the rest is garbage
I read and even I'm in shock, I probably wouldn't have even thought of it) Your hands are golden)
As soon as I get to the suspension, I'll come running to you for advice =)
this is a great job :) I really thought about doing something like this, for the same reason as you, I shake my hand for the work)
ps I'm waiting for the second part)
I looked at them yesterday =) the front one leaked out and the back one a little … the other two are okay.
Everything was done with only one goal, to get hold of a good solid suspension kit, to be honest, everything else does not bother me much.
cost 26-27t.r.
Hammer!-) Of course, you cannot be called a pioneer, but the performance and desire to grow is worthy of all praise. What did the whole business cost?
It turned out great, I also suffer from this idea, and now there is a good example. current, I think the details of the turner to order. the only question is to find springs
well done!
Good job, once again I am convinced that if you have a desire, you can do anything ... the main thing is the presence of a drill, a grinder and a semiautomatic device ...
stupid question about the racks, are they all collapsible for cartridges?
Everything was bought in Japan on Yaha, threaded glasses could also be ordered from a turner, but it would not have turned out much cheaper
the question is. where to find the threaded cylinders themselves on the 14th photo
is it from the catalog from the manufacturers? or the turner tried?
Wow! Well done! Did an excellent job! We are waiting for the 2nd part, it is interesting to see what happened in the end :) Respect!
Damn respect to you for the report, I'm waiting for part 2, I want to stir it up myself, Can I ask where I took or ordered the "Screw set for height adjustment"? If it `s not a secret*****
Great article! I think it will help many. Thank you, I'll give you stars for your skills)
Everything is cool, beautiful =) but it turned out a little expensive ... = (
Wow! well young man, respect you! some screws cannot be installed by themselves, but you also made them yourself! =)
Just a class, but is it possible to do this on any car and with any racks? I've been thinking about this for a long time
Super! I am impressed! Bypassed the expensive process of purchasing store bought! The idea and execution are amazing!
+5
Yes, the guy you are cool both in terms of technical knowledge and with your hands. What you did is very skillfully and beautifully. Well done to you.
pull out, do you mean the rebound stroke for slaughter?)) Well, it turns out not correctly selected performance characteristics of the shock absorber under the spring, if I understand you correctly.

Absorber www.parts-master.ru/articles/50.html
more complex questions are better to ask here www.drive2.ru/o/KMS-Tuning
I'm only familiar with the theory and a little practice
Yes, the question is for you. Thanks a lot! The most important thing for me was to hear that the ammort will dampen the vibrations of the spring. It always seemed to me that the stiffer the spring, the stronger it is "to try to stretch the ammort rod in its cylinder (cartridge)". And as far as I understand, the quality of the suspension depends on this.
greetings)
if the question is asked directly to me, then my subjective opinion is this, and in general it sounds like an answer in your question, that the stiffness will naturally increase, but because of the spring, and against this background, on these kayabs or on analogues without adjustment ... you you won’t feel the difference, in other words, if you put oil (hypothetically) ammo with these springs, then, relatively, the difference will not be visible ... because 10 kg is mmm harsh and the ammo will simply dampen vibrations, by the way, perhaps not clearly. but will.
To be honest, 6 years have passed since the writing of that post, as I understand it)) and today my verdite is this - for sports only coils are needed, good ones with adjustments and stiffness and spring preload ... and you just need a person who can correctly set it up. For everything else, there are lowered springs and any gas ammo, with the condition of working up to -40mm ... if it’s very simple)
I hope it helped, but it’s better to write more interesting questions to Kovalchuk, although he sells expensive suspensions, I think it’s better than him about basic ones no one will tell you a concept)) the rest are either for money or very busy)
Hello! I have long been interested in how the behavior of the shock absorber system as a whole changes with an increase in spring stiffness. Suppose we put a stiffer spring on the stock rack (kyb exel-g). Let's say 10kg per mm vs. (4-5kg, around factory stock) will the stock strut handle a stiffer spring? Provided it is fully functional. Thank you very much if you answer!
it seems to me that it is very easy to calculate - first pull out the stem, then completely compress it, and then adjust it as you need, measure how it sits and how much is left ...
what do you think, what compression stroke turned out on my suspension) if you count in millimeters?
Unfortunately for you, because you described it and apparently expected, then this kit will not give you a pure height adjustment, you will have it regulated solely by sacrificing the "compression stroke".
I don’t know where the car will be used for most of its movement, but the compression stroke for Russia is a very important thing ...
Platinum hands =)
The words are not a share, but the essence ... there is no other way in this matter ...
There is some truth in your words)) And how is it implemented on the norms of screws? Well done author, golden hands! Test!
other adjustment. the lower part is spinning - the hub fist - then the suspension travel and stiffness is unchanged - only the height changes
Um…maybe a question =) it seems to me that the
author can help me a little =))) Standing on a barrel for 94 years.
A standard Kayaba does not want to work with such springs for a long time, and on large depressions on the road there is a loud blow to the body (?)
The question is. What kind of shock absorbers to get so that there is no such knock and they do not get killed and work well with these springs?
:((
bearings rather than shock absorbers knock, this is typical for ALs
, try to change the supports, it should pass
well done! in theory, you can do SO from any rack. and there will be cola :) . the main thing is not to be lazy. somehow my friend and I also wanted to take up this matter, but all hands did not reach. at the end, I bought trdishnye cola. although I had to try. I think the most expensive thing is the cartridge itself trdish?! Yes? and the rest is not so expensive stuff. By the way, I would try Kayaba AGX cartridges, they are also regulated but budget. they cost 5 thousand, and trdishnye 8 thousand if my memory serves me right.
