Repair and reinforcement of the frame followed by a bummer, or how I went astray :) - Toyota Crown, 2.0 liter, 1991

             Toyota Crown 20 1991

So, it was decided to assemble a car from scratch (that is, from the frame), but the frame will be discussed here. and since the concept of the car is not fully defined and the possibility of a convertible is not excluded, we decided to strengthen it for one thing.

It all started with the fact that looking at the documents on the car I read:
- frame number - (dash)
- Body number XXXXXXXXXX (digits)
from here the conclusion is that the number is on the body, and the frame is numberless, so I choose the frame that has already been removed and work has begun:
— cleaned of rust;
- I bought 2 meters of a square-section pipe with a rib along the height of the frame
- I cut it in half (as in the photo),
- straightened it a little and
- boiled it with electric welding

total:
2 days of leisurely work
and 1550 rubles. (electrodes for welding, drill 18 and pipe)

what happened in the photo

and now the fun part :)

Thanks to drive2.ru (special thanks to Smanick) I found out where the body number is, but it still ended up on the frame … damn it!

so now I have worked out the process of strengthening the frame, honed my metal welding skills a bit (since I did welding for the second time in my life)

in general, where we started and ended :)

but the next frame will be longer by 30-40 cm :)
who has experience in "lengthening" I will be glad for any information :)

The number on the frame, I say this from my own experience, it’s just that a guy in the traffic police told me that these crowns didn’t have a body number, and if it was in the documents, it was mixed up and this is the frame number and they swapped them when they found them, the conversation was about the 131st ATPQR. Yours is probably the same as mine. But in general, to be honest, very few people know this, and you can safely knock down the number on the frame and make it numberless, still re-arrange everything as a homemade product, probably.

Threat all owners of 131s ask about the frame number, collect statistics

It's even nice that they mentioned :)
but now I know what the frame of my crown looks like separately from it :)

thank you very much for the number. otherwise it would have been worse (when I would have started collecting)
PS did you mention anything in the text about you?

At the crown club, we agreed that in the central part (where you restored it) the frame is not load-bearing, in fact, even the metal is thinner there. The carrier is the body and the roof, as on all cars.
Therefore, my IMHO - lengthen it as you yourself will be more comfortable.
Especially since there is an extension of the body ahead, 11 interior elements, cardan, exhaust, brake and fuel turbos, 2 cables, 2 braids leads (and antenna wire), and refrigerator lines.

I’m especially concerned about the cardan so far (there are options to order according to the size or pick up from something or try to make it 3-section from the old ones)
and I think everything else is not difficult, especially when you have the same crown for spare parts.

If you make it 3-section, then most likely you will have to add a 2nd suspension beam, because. the gimbal assembly cannot just hang out in the air.

In general, I would just lengthen one of the parts, it seems like it’s quite possible to do this - cardans lengthen. But you need to ask the builders how exactly this is done.

Dear, you are not familiar with the creations of the domestic auto industry :) a cardan assembly can generally do without outboards, especially on a statically placed rear axle gearbox ...

And TS, I would recommend first making a slipway, and then lengthening the frame

If there is Avtodor, any cardan of any length will be made there. the main thing on the machine and with balancing.
