Cool meeting of new "X-Files"
On January 24, the American Fox television channel will premiere the first episode of the return of the popular TV series "The X-Files", closed almost 14 years ago - in May 2002.In mid-January, the start of the new season was shown at Comic Con in New York, so the first - mostly negative - reviews of the show have already appeared on the network. We chose the most important of them.
Despite the fact that Fox will air the first two episodes of The X-Files almost in a row, on January 24 and 25, critics were allowed to watch only the first of them. Observers regarded this caution as an unkind sign: most often this is done with TV shows, in the high quality of which there is no complete certainty.
Throughout its existence, The X-Files have given rise to several talented television personalities, including Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan and Homeland author Alex Gansa. Therefore, the main question for reviewers was whether the new adventures of Agents Mulder and Scully could adequately look against the background of their own legacy in 2016.
According to Tim Goodman of The Hollywood Reporter, who gave the new X-Files two out of five stars, creator Chris Carter has failed to justify a comeback.
"Why go back to the show now? Why give fans only six episodes when The X-Files is known for not being able to reveal its secrets for a hundred? Nostalgia? Fox lacks paranormal episodes on the schedule." (C) Tim Goodman , The Hollywood Reporter
According to Goodman, actors David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson returned to their roles without enthusiasm, which noticeably affects the chemistry between them: the first plays "as if under the influence of sedatives", and the second - to the same extent, "calm and unhurried ".
The critic also notes that in the past 14 years, the series seemed to have stood still. Mulder once again discovers a massive government conspiracy, and Scully, despite the fact that they have watched the paranormal activity together for more than 200 episodes, continues to disbelieve him.
The IndieWire columnist drew attention to a similar problem: in his opinion, the leisurely romantic line between the main characters, which used to benefit the series, not only did not move forward over the years, but also took a few steps back, and the new characters were not given almost no attention.
Any return to the screens is on demand. Not at the request of the audience, but at the request of the plot itself, the development of events. The reason for the comeback that series creator Chris Carter has prepared for viewers is as delicate and fragile as the “I want to believe†poster that is unceremoniously ripped in half in the first episode.
New characters are stereotyped. Actor Joel McHale ("The Community") is a casting mistake that ruins the atmosphere, and the character of outstanding American actress Annette Mahendru is a "trash" role that no one even tried to do. "(C) Ben Travers, IndieWire From
Variety , who also gave "The X-Files" two stars out of five, also got the impression that the new season of the series has nothing to offer viewers, except for a big name.
"Throughout the first episode, it's hard to get rid of the feeling that this is all an exercise for money, a way to make money from a famous name."
"It seems that the format [of six episodes] was specially chosen so that everyone involved in the show, especially David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, can spend a minimum of their time on work" (c) Brian Lowry, Variety
Meet and positive feedback on new ones " The X-Files â€, but they are owned by little-known sites like Comic Book Resources.
"There are a lot of good things in the first episode, including going back to the same office that still has pencils sticking out of the ceiling."
Having to re-enter the path of solving eerie mysteries, whether personal or alien, is simplified by the comfortable chemistry between Anderson and Duchovny.
"It was clearly easier for the former to return to her role than the latter, who fails to bring believable passion back into Mulder's climactic monologue. But these nuances are hard to notice: you're just happy to be back together." (C) Christie Pichko, Comic Book Resources
Formally, the return of The X-Files is not considered a new season. For Fox, this is the so-called "event series" - a one-time return of the show to the screens without the prospect of a continuation. Similarly, new episodes were given to Heroes and 24 Hours.
