The behavior of video cards is different in different games. Based on needs and capacities, the 970 is slightly more efficient in overclocking compared to the 290x. Kepler (780 ti) is not even worth considering (although the potential for overclocking is unrealistic!) - the architecture is too controversial, and, of course, drivers for the 900 series are being written now.
