A couple of questions about the vault / vault (Fallout 4)

If I zaphny unnecessary weapons / armor into the workshop, where all the trash is, will it not "gobble up" them when crafting?
And is it necessary to build turrets around the storage, where is my trash?
And when is it desirable to start building your base, and in what place?

On my own I will add that when leaving the power armor, do not forget to pull out the nuclear unit, otherwise the NPC running past can appropriate it.
