Playing with a gamepad on PC (Fallout 4)

Has anyone tried playing with a gamepad on a PC?
I did it with difficulty. It's really not that bad except for one important point - it's almost impossible to shoot without Vats. Opponents are fast enough and hard enough to catch them with the stick.
Usually in such situations there is help in aiming, but here I did not find anything like this in the settings.
Has anyone come across a similar one?
And yet - how is it going on consoles?
