screen extension issue (Portal 2)

I have an old monitor and the game starts at an unsupported frequency and extension. Is there any way to change the frequency and extension without entering the game?

if you have Windows 7 then go to the game folder, right click on Portal2.exe>properties>compatibility>use screen resolution 640x480, it should work

expansion is not a problem, I need to change the frequency
