Modifications (Prototype)
who knows, people create skins for alex with some kind of program (or not a program, then what?) who knows what program it is, if you know, then take a link where to download it. also tell me how the skin of the armor is created, like a spider-man (black) saw in the files for the prototype, I also want to create a thread.thanks in advance!
Making mods is not as easy as it seems, I already tried to create a mod for Spore, nifiga, I didn’t even understand how to use the program!
It depends on what mods. If you mean textures, then download http://www.playground.ru/files/20049/
well, here is a little bit about it .......................
How to make good game mods
Mod is an abbreviation for the word "modification". So any modification of the game is called a mod. Well, this is from the point of view of linguistics and word formation. In fact, from the point of view of the player, today we have more than a hundred mods for the Mafia, of which no more than a dozen are playable. So why and who needs the rest of the mods, and can they even be called mods from the point of view of the player, and not by word formation? Personally, I think that no one except their authors needs these mods! The fact is that the creation of mods is an exciting process in itself, and the creation of a mod for your favorite game is doubly exciting. When you can do something that you were missing in the game, when it starts to take on a life of its own, then you get more pleasure than after completing the most difficult mission. Believe me! So homegrown modders tirelessly rivet their super-mods without having the slightest idea about creating games, about what game-play is, and not wanting to learn all this. After all, you can find dozens of tools, programs for various Mafia modding on the Internet, it’s just that your eyes run wide, what to choose. And with the help of these programs, any person, even who does not understand anything, for example, in programming, can make his own mod, but whether this mod will be of interest to other players is a big question.
The purpose of writing this article is a great desire to teach people how to make good mods, namely game mods, those that will be really interesting to play. Why do I need it? Good question! I, like all Mafia fans, are already tired of waiting for the release of Mafia 2, but I still want to play something new. In general, this is where my passion for Mafia modding came from. But if, as I said above, the very process of creating a mod is an interesting game, then playing your own mod is not interesting! What is the interest in looking for secrets and hiding places that you yourself have hidden? It turns out to be a mess! That is why I immediately decided to make the Alive mod as live, that is, which will randomly change its behavior, so that even its creator cannot predict it. Just for this, it was invented so that it would not be boring to play it yourself. Life has shown that this decision was the right one - after all, Alive has hundreds, if not thousands of fans who have been playing it for years, three years or more, and they still have not tired of it. But now it’s not about that, I’ll tell you about the Alive mod later, now the main thing is to focus on the idea that the mod was made alive only so that it would be more interesting for me to play it myself. If someone made a rather interesting mod, then I would love to play such a mod! It’s just that interesting mods are not visible on the horizon ... So I want to tell you how you can make a mod that would interest players, in general, it’s not so difficult ... Or maybe, if a normal team gathers, then the second Mafia can be made , this is also quite doable, but I’ll tell you about this a little later ... And now about fashion ... who play it for years, three years or more, and they still haven't got tired of it. But now it’s not about that, I’ll tell you about the Alive mod later, now the main thing is to focus on the idea that the mod was made alive only so that it would be more interesting for me to play it myself. I must say right away that I don’t make models or textures, just like I don’t do, for example, web design. God did not give me the talent of an artist, but I do not like and do not want to do something mediocre. Of course, I made some simple models and textures for the Alive mod, but this is only out of desperation, since none of the modelers and texturers wanted to help me. The only thing is that Madnuk made a mine model, and I finished the textures and applied them myself. So, although I do not make models and textures, I still have an idea about them, quite enough to make mods with them.
A small but useful reminder!
I hope that if you have read up to this point, then your Mafia resources are already unpacked by DataXTractor. The fact is that we can install mods without unpacking the resources into separate folders, but if you want to try your hand at modding and do something yourself, then you definitely need to have all the folders unpacked in order to have the source materials to work with, because it is we will modify these source files in one way or another. If your Mafia folder does not contain additional folders (MISSIONS, maps, models, etc.), then you need to take the DataXTractor and extract the game resource files.
If you already have modding experience and consider yourself quite advanced in this business, then some of the initial examples that I will give you may seem too simple, in which case you can skip them. I try to build my articles from simple to complex so that even beginners can understand them, so some of the material is quite simple and is designed specifically for beginners.
Let me remind you that it would be very wise to back up all the files that you change, for example, save these files in a separate folder. Of course, if you mistakenly destroy a file, you can extract it from the resources again, but we cannot extract the files one by one, for this you have to unpack the whole folder, and this is quite a long time. So better save! This is also important if you edit the same file several times (for example, add new scripts) - do not forget to make intermediate copies.
So, what are the main types (or types, whatever you want to call it) of modding that can be present in any game at all, and not just in the Mafia:
Replacement (substitution) of models or Model swapping
The simplest example: find two files krava.4ds and Tommy.4ds in the models folder, copy them to the folder where you will store the backup, delete the Tommy.4ds file in the models folder, and rename the krava.4ds file to Tommy.4ds ... this all you need to do and your first mod is ready, you can run the Mafia and see that Tom has turned into a cow, as in the picture. It's fun enough to run around in a cow's skin for 10-15 minutes, but quickly gets bored. Still, it's stupid to change Tom for a cow! Yes, and having made such a mod, it’s still not worth claiming the title of a modder and sending this mod to mafia sites, since no one will post it there, no one needs such a mod now. Although before large mafia sites were happy to post such mods, they were even proud of the skill of the developers. Until now, you can find, for example, "Guitar Mod", the whole point of which is that Tom has a guitar instead of a baseball bat and he beats everyone with this guitar. Undoubtedly, this is a cool mod! Quite worthy of the title of "Mafia Modding Hochma", of course, if there were not many other contenders for this title. Well, let's get back to the replacement of models ...
When you get tired of admiring Tom Cow, just copy the two previously saved files to the models folder, replacing the modified files with them, and the game will return to its original state. But don't remove the cow yet, we'll still need it.
Don't think that if the example given looks very simple and seems frivolous, then the model replacement method cannot be used with more sense. In fact, this is quite a serious method, one of the most commonly used in the modding of various games, including the Mafia. For example, it is widely used to install new models of machines, precisely because of the ease of use of this method. Conclusion: this method can and should be used, and it is no more difficult to use than in the above example about a cow. Of course, there are more complex and advanced methods for installing new models, but I will talk about them later, in the appropriate section. In the meantime, you should understand and master this method, if you are not familiar with it, of course.
Here is a very specific example of using model replacement, suggested by our forum member Alexander:

Replacing or editing textures (so-called skins, skins, etc. .)
A little thought on the topic. The term "texture" for three-dimensional models has already become common, although, from my point of view, it is not quite correct. Texture, which is a flat, that is, two-dimensional image, is well suited for overlaying on flat surfaces and completely unsuitable for overlaying on 3D objects. To understand what I'm talking about, imagine what happens to a photograph if you wrap, for example, an apple in it. Or a reverse example, imagine how you need to unfold the globe to get a flat picture. In both cases, your flat image will look a little like a three-dimensional object due to areas of the image lost when wrapping. That is, it is not correct to call a flat image for a three-dimensional object a texture, it is rather a wrapper, in English it will sound like wrapping or folding. There is one more nuance to make the object look three-dimensional on the screen, its skin, as it were, displays the play of light and shadow - some parts will be lighter, some darker. Thus, if you paint over the skin with one color, then most likely you will not see this color on the model - shades of this color will be visible.
Why am I saying this? And to the fact that if we use special 3D modeling programs, then there we have tools that help to make a “wrapper†for a 3D object, which is much easier than making a good skin manually, for example, in Photoshop. In general, if you want to make wraps or fix existing ones, then you must have a small (or rather large) talent of the artist, otherwise your models will look strange, at best We can see a lot of examples of this - there are literally thousands of very poor models on the Internet for Mafia. So, if you don’t have artistic talents, then it’s better not to do this ... I don’t do it (well, I almost don’t do it), and I don’t regret it a bit
Okay, enough of the lyrics, let's get back to our sheep ... uh ... i.e. cows
Let's try experimenting with cowhide. One of the biggest problems for beginner modders is identifying or finding the files that form the wrapper for the model. The fact is that there are more than 16,000 files in the folder with textures (maps) and searching for the desired textures by browsing is very tedious, you can try. In fact, the search process can be greatly simplified if you simply open the model file with a regular text editor, for example, Wordpad and look at which BMP files the model refers to. So, let's take our cow file krava.4ds (it should be in the backup folder if the first example was completed) and open it with Wordpad. At the very beginning of the file, we will see that Cow01.bmp, this is the file with the cowhide, as shown in the picture. More like some kind of radioactive mutant than a cow. But it should be so, because this is a wrapper (see above), when this flat picture wraps a three-dimensional model of a cow, it will look like an animal Pay attention! If in the case of the cow we have only one wrapper file, then in the case of more complex models there may be several such files. For example, for cars there are separate files for tires, bumpers, body, interior, etc. Let's take our Cow01.bmp file and open it in Paint for example. Let's write Cow 007 on the side of the cow and save it. Now you can start the game and enjoy the result Note that on one side the inscription will be mirrored! This is because we have only one side drawn, the same file will be pulled onto the other game engine, but mirrored. The cow example is, of course, primitive. But he can give the necessary experience and an idea of what a skin is. In exactly the same way, you can change the skins on other models, for example, repaint cars or change the clothes of characters. Important point! Some models have 8-bit textures, ie. only 256 colors. This was done to increase the rendering speed of objects and reduce the size of texture files, ultimately to increase the performance of the game. So, if you have changed the texture, especially if you have tried to work with full color images (TrueColor), you may be surprised to find that the textures in the game after your editing have not changed at all. In this case, try looking in the maps folder for a file with the same name but with a different extension, such as filename.565. If you are making a mod for your personal use, you can simply delete the file with extension 565, run the game again and see your modified textures. However, if you want to share your textures with others, then you need to create a file with the same name, but only with zero size. Then, when copying to the textures folder, it will overwrite the old file and new textures will appear. Well, everything seems to be in terms of textures, it seems there are no more secrets here - everything is simple, you can try it yourself. But, if you do not have the gift of an artist, then most likely freaks will turn out. To check if you have such a gift, try, for example, coloring a cow like a zebra and see what you get Well, everything seems to be in terms of textures, it seems there are no more secrets here - everything is simple, you can try it yourself. Note that we have not used any special programs yet, but we can already make mods! Whether these mods will be interesting or not is another question. Are you interested in Snow Mod? After all, it does not change anything except textures and music. True, the authors of the Snow mod used some kind of editor more powerful than Paint (for example, Photoshop), but the essence remains the same. As for replacing the music, this is generally a moot point! Who likes to run around Lost Haven to the cheerful music of Jingle Bells? Here the creators of the mod obviously went too far! Although, if you treat the Snow Fashion as a New Year's joke, then it will work. In my opinion, the music in the Mafia is so organically selected that if you change it, then only for something equal in level, but not lower! I probably will not even consider in detail the methods and tricks of modding the game's scale, I will only say, that it is also easier than a steamed turnip! We just convert the music to OGG format and put it in the sounds / MUSIC folder, replacing the old files. A little more details can be found here:
So, using a simple cow example, we looked at methods that are quite sufficient for creating simple, and, perhaps, not the most interesting mods. If you've never modded before, give it a try! Guaranteed to get a lot of fun. And to make some more complex mods, you will need special programs and some additional knowledge, but more on that in another section. Here in This.
I'm not talking about TexMod, I don't need to change textures, I need to change its 3D model, but how?
Oooh, yes, everyone dreams of this :) And in EVERY game))) Look for a cool programmer, I’m sorry, I don’t know where they are found, I would come in handy myself :)))
Somehow I dreamed of extracting models from games ... =)) Immediately in 3DMax ... it would be cool =)
Hello!
I have a question, how to open p3d files with graphics for prototype*?
Is it even possible?!
you don’t need to throw the mod, but with the help of texmod make it into the game ask Kavo for a thread like I don’t have time right now
open texmod eam writes click on the folder shortcut in texmode click select the folder where you have prototype installed and select prototype exe lose a folder label below you click on it and select the folder where you have the add-on file, select it, then press run and that's it
