What does Kodama's soul do? (Nioh 2)

Received the Kodama Soul Core after the exchange. And now I can’t understand, when using it, Kodama just throws a projectile, does almost no damage. And sometimes the elixir drops. The main question is, does the elixir always drop or is there some chance?
