Can't complete \"To The Quick\" quest

When I arrived at the family's house, I appeared at the door and 3 enemies appeared right next to Freak on the other side of the room. I immediately paused, then tried to run over and help, but they shot Frick before I could take more than a couple of steps. That's why I couldn't save her and get information. The assignment says to return to the king.

No matter what options I choose, the king gets upset, orders an execution, and the game switches to everyone outside. My character walks forward a little, then stops and everything freezes in place. Everyone is just standing around, nothing is happening, and nothing I can do is promoting anything. So I'm stuck and can't move forward.

I didn't have a chance to save Frick so I thought it was ok, but there doesn't seem to be a second option to get this quest right.
