How to invite a friend, join a group?

You or your friend must join a match on or after creating a custom match. There is no squad lobby in the main menu.

Solution:
When you are playing a match, invitations will be available in the friends menu in the ESC menu - In the main menu, you can join a friend who is playing a match.
