Recipes for crafting (Red Dead Redemption 2)

What I do not quite understand the principle of crafting in this game. For example you want to make tonics for the horse and Arthur, but no recipes or formulas, and used to make tonics for Arthur endurance and health. Maybe I'm missing something? How to make tonics for the horse? And so forth.
