How to use the single player campaign? (Alien: Isolation)

Experts, tell me how the single player campaign properly use it?
E - start the single player campaign near the door lock, the mouse will activate the green bar, move select key numbers by selecting, press E. And what should you look for the correct key? Or here, just at random? Found keys with each new attempt to change, it's possible to try indefinitely. What should you look for when selecting keys, and press E? Yet, I somehow managed to open only one door, and as I did not understand. Please explain.
