Insight and its meaning (Bloodborne)

What is the meaning of enlightenment?
I understand the meaning of 1 unit in the insight. Messengers baths and doll pumping.
But what is the point of increasing the illumination on? What does it mean? Or is it pointless?
And Yes, I know that at 40, the illumination can be seen the huge creatures.
