It can release ~50-100 MB of RAM. If you have a RAM of 256 MB, it can and will affect, but if a lot more (which is likely), then these paltry 50 MB of situation does not help.
Function left over from the Vista when it came out - RAM was much smaller and it could really help, but now stupid Windows just out of habit of randomly popping up with the proposal to include a simplified style.
