as for me, throughout the game you can use three barrel - u-100, 1911 with a silencer, and grenade launcher against heavies with machine guns and equipment.

Well... the entire game I used only a pistol with a silencer (in the beginning, before the receive Vector), the Vector with a silencer (after a couple introductory missions), grenade launcher for missions to stop the column and auto sniper that auto with first shot kills to players-intruders.
