Falling skies / Come from heaven / Falling Skies (TV Series 2011-2014)

Sci-Fi story, just planned invasion of Earth by aliens who have better military technologies. For earthlings it was a complete surprise, they struggle to survive as they can. Battle hard, they seek contact with like-minded people with the same "lucky" as they are, only from other localities. They unite to defeat the intruders that have poisoned the lives of civilians. Their lives too have changed, not for the better.
The main character – a former Professor, Tom Mason, who taught in the University's history, was appointed Deputy commander of the Massachusetts regiment. He needs not only to confront and fight aliens, but to save his heir. The story will tickle the nerves of the audience...make our hero and what terrible events he'll have to fight?
