The Internet through GPRS

GPRS (short for General Packet Radio Service, which translated into Russian language — packet radio for General use) - new technology that allows cell phone users to communicate with other devices in the GSM network. Mobile operators use this technology to grant Internet access to its subscribers. Unlike Dial-Up Internet access, tarifitsiruyutsya via airtime GPRS involves charging by the number of the information received.

Most cellular operators provide two services using data transfer via GPRS: GPRS-Wap and GPRS-Internet. The service "GPRS-Wap" is used only for viewing Wap-sites, the service "GPRS-Internet" (or "Internet via GPRS") is intended to make full use of the Internet.

To use ICQ-client on your mobile phone you need to activate "Internet via GPRS" and set the phone. This article will help you cope with this difficult task.

Before you begin connecting and settings of the service "GPRS-Internet", make sure that you cell phone supports GPRS or EDGE.

Settings for MTS:

To use GPRS and EDGE you need to activate the GPRS service. To connect this service from your mobile phone:

- if you are a subscriber pripadnik tariff plans, you need to call from your mobile phone to short number 0022 and follow the instructions of the autoinformer;

- if you are a subscriber contract tariff plans, you need to call from your mobile phone to short number 0880 and follow the instructions of the autoinformer;

After a successful connection, you must configure your phone to work with GPRS. Below you will find the standard GPRS settings MTS, suitable for most modern phones:

Connection name: MTS Internet
Data bearer: Packet data (GPRS)
The access point name: internet.mts.ru
User name: mts
Request password: no
Password: mts
Additional options: default (no change)

If you have activated the service "GPRS-Internet", set up your phone, but the Internet is not working, recommend you contact MTS contact centre to number 0880 when calling from a cell phone or by calling (495) 766-0166 when calling from a landline.

Settings for Megaphone:

To activate the service "GPRS-Internet" you need to go to the SIM Menu, select "Specialist", then "Podpiska". In the appeared menu choose "GPRS Internet", then "Podkluchenie uslugi". The following is an example of a standard GPRS settings Megaphone:

Connection name: Megafon Internet
Data bearer: Packet data (GPRS)
The access point name: internet
User name: gdata
Request password: Yes
Password: gdata
Additional options: default (no change)

Most modern phones support the automatic configuration feature. In order to automatically configure your phone to use the service "Internet via GPRS" go to the SIM Menu, select "Light" and "Nastroyka", "Other", in the appeared menu select the item "All settings". After a few seconds you will receive SMS, when opened, of which your phone's settings will be made automatically.

*The above instructions are relevant only for subscribers of MegaFon-Lite. If you are a subscriber contract rate, you must call the contact centre Megaphone at 0500 number from your mobile phone and ask to activate "Internet via GPRS" and send SMS to some phone settings.
