Question about the main character (Red Dead Redemption)

I want to ask one thing, who does not know keep in mind will be hard spoiler about the ending.
So the question:
At the end of the game the main character is killed, and I'm mildly nuts, and finally allowed to play for his son dunce. The question is, and it is possible to save John or the way it should be and it will not change?

Impossible. But the game can finish and avenge John, having one job is under question.

There is another DLC about zombies, where you can play as a zombie John.
