Where to store things? (Fallout 4)

Knowing Skyrim, I think any box / chest / barrel keeps things put in it until you take them out of there. And just thrown things on the floor are also saved, you just need to remember where you left them.

Everything, figured out, you can build chests and safes using the workshop.
