The free shooter Splitgate, a "mix of Portal and Halo", has been on PC for a couple of years now, during which it struggled to maintain a player base.
According to Steam Charts, a fairly strong launch in May 2019 quickly dropped to a monthly average of just over 100 concurrent players. Things started to improve a little in late 2020, but over the past week, player numbers have exploded to the point where it can be very difficult to get into the game.
The reason is the upcoming launch on the console, set for July 27, and more specifically, the open beta that is happening right now. The beta launched on July 13 with full crossplay between PC, Xbox and PlayStation and was a runaway success - to the point where developer 1047 Games first extended the beta and then shut it down completely yesterday because the servers were being crushed by demand.
QuoteWe decided to take the beta offline for tonight. It was a tough day trying to deal with this scale, and it is not fair to you. Everyone who has played the beta so far will receive 5 drops as a token of our appreciation. Stay tuned for updates and optimizations on the morning of July 22, 2021
Beta testing is back, but unfortunately the overcrowding issues have not been resolved.
Quote“We spent all night optimizing, but after talking to AWS [Amazon Web Services], we learned that our database (redis) can only handle 65,536 concurrent players (which is what we achieved last night). So no optimizations matter yet. We are working on a queuing system to allow 65k ppl until we remove this restriction. "
Naturally, much of this sudden surge in demand is due to console players, but Steam is also seeing a significant surge:
Steam Charts says there are over 8,400 people playing the game at this point. And sadly, these server issues affect PC players along with everyone else.
1047 said he hopes to implement a queuing system "soon" to help better manage traffic, but he also has a pinned tweet that is pretty clear about managing expectations:
Quote"For those who don't know, we are a small development team with 4 engineers and we have had over 500K downloads since the beta started. Thank you all for your patience and support. We are really shocked."
The longer-term question is whether Splitgate will be able to maintain those numbers after a full launch on console on July 27th.
Splitgate is free to play on Steam and you can find out more at splitgate.com.
Spoiler
More and more Steam users are turning their attention to the multiplayer action game Splitgate. This was reported on August 2 by the PCGamesN portal.
data-controller = "core.front.core.autoSizeIframe"
The publication noted that Splitgate has become so popular that the developers even had to postpone the release of version 1.0 in order to increase the "capacity" of the servers.
The peak online was on July 30, 2021, at some point more than 28.3 thousand people were playing at the same time in Splitgate. On the same day, the authors of the game reported that the total number of players on all platforms exceeded 100 thousand.
For reference: Splitgate is being developed by the studio 1047 Games, for which this project is its debut. The game is a free multiplayer shooter with portal mechanics set in a sci-fi setting (game world).

Watched a few videos and it really looks like a halo. Cannons are guessed, some cards, despite a completely different aesthetics, cause a kind of déjà vu. I should try.
Spoiler
Splitgate's sudden success has left studio 1047 Games struggling to cope with it. The original plan was to launch the "Portal + Halo" shooter in version 1.0 on July 27, but thanks to the huge surge in player interest generated by the open beta available on consoles, this decision has been pushed back so the studio can increase the capacity of its servers. Release 1.0 was pushed back to an unspecified date in August, but this release has now been postponed indefinitely.
Studio CEO Jan Prulks said the game "will remain in open beta for the foreseeable future as the small studio continues to scale up the popular shooter that saw over 10 million downloads in its first 30 days of open beta." According to the studio, the number of concurrent players in the game has grown from 4,000 to 175,000 "in a few weeks."
This is a sensible reaction to the unexpected meteoric rise of the game. The "open beta" status is unlikely to make a huge difference to players anyway: Fortnite's Battle Royale mode spent two years in open beta before launching in 1.0 last year.
“When looking at the scalability issues of the game backend, the process involves a lot more than just dealing with server capacity,†said Prulks. “We are focused on keeping the game stable for fans and iterating on the parallel capacity of the game to minimize player latency. We want to do it right, and we want to be ready to scale up massively when we officially launch, continuing to improve the beta with frequent updates, additional features and server capacity improvements. â€
While things are getting better all the time, you will probably still need to check the status of the Splitgate server if you're struggling to get into the game. The Battle Pass beta is still due to end on August 24, but there is big Splitgate news coming August 25 through Gamescom.
Spoiler
Developer Splitgate 1047 Games recently took to Twitter to reveal fan-requested information regarding the addition of a Battle Royale mode.
The official Twitter account mentions that the battle royale mode is not currently being reviewed by the development team, so fans shouldn't hold their breath.
QuoteNo battle royale plans are on the horizon. We have a never say never philosophy for most functions, but BR falls into the don't hold your breath category.
That being said, the team also noted that it might add a regime sometime later in the future, which is evident from its never say never policy. An interesting point to note is the controversy that the community seems to have over this issue, and many fans are expressing their concerns about such a regime.
Splitgate was a huge hit for 1047 Games in such an unprecedented way that the team was constantly running into server issues for quite some time. The team has a lot of plans for the future and wants to be available on as many platforms as possible.
Spoiler
Splitgate managed to gain popularity among players just this year. The title was released back in 2019, but with the release of the game on consoles, it became very popular - at its peak, the title had 67 thousand players on Steam. The shooter's attention drew investors to the 1047 Games studio.
The head of the studio, Ian Prue, spoke in an interview with Techcrunch about the large-scale plans for the development of the shooter. Now with the arrival of money, the studio is not limited by anything.
QuoteThe scale of what we can do is going through the roof. We focus on the long term - I see the game as 25% done. We don't need to be Fortnite tomorrow, but right now it's really about building the next Riot Games, the next big gaming business.
Pru noted that the team will continue to listen to the players and the community and operate as an indie studio. It's just that 1047 Games now has a lot of money.
Splitgate is available for free on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X / S.
Spoiler
Studio 1047 Games announced that it received a $ 100 million investment from venture capital funds. They will allow the team to remain independent and develop the shooter Splitgate, which has become incredibly popular this summer.
As of August 18, the game was downloaded 10 million times on all platforms, and servers in the summer on each platform reached up to 100 thousand concurrent players. The money will go towards expanding the state in order to quickly deal with bugs and release updates. There are even plans to increase the number of players in matches.
QuoteIn the coming months, we will focus on becoming the next big AAA studio while staying true to our roots as an indie team that puts our community first. When Splitgate reaches version 1.0, it will be a truly historic release.
Splitgate is a free shooter that combines Halo-style arenas and Portal portals. This mix creates truly insane matches and unique competitive gameplay.
Splitgate is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X / S.
