Nothing prevents you from displaying the picture on a TV set by 29 inches, while setting the resolution to 800x600 and 6x FSAA - in this case "PS2 + TV = picture is better" nervously smokes in the corner ... And 21 inches on the monitor + 1600x1200 with the same FSAA it will also look good ... 
Connect the set-top box to a cool TV set via RBG (or at least S-video) and you will have a clear image. Some console games support HDTV: D
