Joining the Covenant (Dark Souls 3)

Hi. Straight to the point: I can't use items to join the covenant. What could be the problem? Has anyone come across this?

There are so many topics with this question. I would have looked so as not to proliferate topics. Items are put on the character in the inventory. Like a piece of clothing
