Well, you can insert it, it's just that Armors with sockets on the classics do not fall out - neither white, nor any other. This is how it was originally, they only appeared in Expansion.
True, there is a way to get Armor with a socket on the classic (only one and only rare) - this is the recipe for 3 Perfect Skulls + 1 Rare Item + Stone of Jordan = Add 1 Socket To a Rare Item. But since soj is a very rare item for this recipe, they usually look for a very good Armor (insert usually Perfect Ruby).
