Of course, the developers can come up with something like that, but so far it turns out that at the end, after the credits, this is the spirit of Thomas, who was always there. And Thomas's watch, which he picked up in the afterlife, and Marianne, who picked it up in the real world, confirm that Thomas seems to be dead.
