God of War II is an upcoming sequel to the video game and will be for Sony PlayStation 2. It is currently slated for March 13, 2007 Game Director Koray Barlog confirmed the release date, saying that "there will be no delay." [
God of War II entered beta on December 22, 2006. A demo is expected in January 2007.
God of War II will be two disc sets, with bonus materials on the second disc, including a complete diary of the game's production. There is no special edition, all copies will ship with two discs.
Enemies
From the trailer shown in E3, it seems that several enemies from the original game, including undead soldiers, Cyclops, and the giant Minotaur (similar to the boss in the original game), will return for a sequel. It also appears that the harpies will return, however they have been given a new look that appears to be much larger and darker than they were in the original. Some of the new enemies shown in the trailer are skeletons that are able to rebuild themselves after they are destroyed, a hog-like creature and hardens that are able to set the Cyclops for extra power. It is possible that Cerberus is the boss seeing as a statue that resembled him appeared in the trailer.
Also in E3, the creators noted that enemies will be more aware of each other than in the original, in which a large mass of enemies simply attacked Kratos with little knowledge of their environment. In God of War II, they will be able to intelligently interact, like the aforementioned import riding Cyclops. The trailer at E3 also featured gorgons from the first game, but except for the now gorgon, the freezing ray could stun other gorgons, which was not possible in the first game.
Gameplay
The beginning of the game will see Kratos descend from Olympus to take up the destruction of the Greek city of Rhodes, in which his forces were employed. Another God, supposed to be Athena, comes down and strips Kratos of his powers, leaving him standing in the city as a mortal, with Athena's Blades (obtained from Athena after defeating Ares) and a period of Poseidon's Wrath at his disposal. God then brings a giant colossus statue to life, sending it to kill Kratos. A battle between the colossus and Kratos rages throughout the city.
Kratos will also be able to take flight, although this could be at the end of Pegasus or using Icaras Wings. Winged combat against enemies on the Griffins is also a strong rumor. Another feature of the story that has been confirmed is that the relics will be more closely tied to the story, like obtaining the Golden Fleece to reflect the gaze of the Gorgon that is adorned on the temple door. Also, items like Cyclops eyes can only be obtained by completing minigames.
There will be a new Challenge of the Gods mode, which is said to be more difficult and includes a ranking system. There are bonuses for reaching the highest rank; however, the next level can be reached by reaching the lowest grade. There is a saving feature between rounds as well.
Weapons
That Have Been Confirmed: It has been confirmed that Kratos will receive 3 additional weapons, bringing the total to four.
Blades of Athena: Given to Kratos by the goddess Athena. Most of the company's steps from the original have been carried over. The Cyclone of the Chaos maneuver is still the same (as seen in the Stabby video on IGN as the first move Kratos makes), while a similar move shows Kratos rolling his arms on the same side, instead of separately.
Barbarian King's Hammer: This hammer comes from the Barbarian King and can summon the dead souls of Hades; this weapon is actually the second "Hades return period" Army, but included in the weapon.
I've been waiting for this game for a long time.

One thing that was great about the overall package last time out was all of the included bonus material. God of War II will up the ante a bit when it ships as a two-disc set. No, this isn't the collector's edition (there won't be one) but the standard edition. The second disc will include a number of bonuses including a full-length, behind-the-scenes documentary that was filmed over the entirety of the game's development, starting with the very first playtest. Cool stuff indeed.
