From an interview with Tsubasa Sakaguchi, Splatoon Development Lead:
First, we plan to release Splatun as a full-fledged retail game in 2015 ... in the first half of 2015. it will be a full-fledged release, of course we plan to include both a single player mode and a one-on-one multiplayer mode that can be played without an Internet connection. From what we can tell you about the "one-on-one" mode, at least one player will use the WiiU Gamepad, and the other - the Pro Controller. And we are thinking about how to make the "one-on-one" mode completely different from "4-on-4", to make it more about chasing and hide and seek in paint. It will feel more relaxed. the slide under the floor gets confused in the other team's paint. and the character gets a demage. the same thing happens when a player from the other team shoots paint at you.
