Following the recent E3 game announcement, BioWare Canada General Manager Aaron Flynn was interviewed briefly on Edmonton AM.
- What is the plot of the game?
- You play as a man, one of the Mercenaries, whose task is to protect humanity on a distant planet. We call the genre of the game "science fantasy", like Star Wars and the Marvel Universe: you see a lot of amazing things, but you don't really think about why and how they happen, how it is even possible. Mass Effect is closer to real sci-fi, and Anthem simply provides an opportunity to have fun in an exotic, immersive gaming world.
- So this is a shooter or? ..
- The game has a shooter mechanic. Elements of action and RPG allow you to feel like a character yourself and take part in events. This is a co-op, our first game in a long time, in which you can play with your friends and experience all the events together. We know that many people would like to play these games now, so we hope that they will enjoy it.
- Years have passed since your last game *, how do you feel now that your next project is announced?
- It's hard to believe it. We have been working for almost five years, changing, supplementing and improving. Our teams went through a difficult creative process, and I am very proud that they had the courage and perseverance not to abandon this idea and develop it. The game was very well received at E3, we were congratulated by colleagues, the feedback from journalists was positive - we got into the top of the best games on the show. When you present your ideas to the public after so many years, this reaction is encouraging.
- I understand that it was a long time ago, but do you remember where the idea of ​​the game came from?
- Yes, that was after the release of our last (in BioWare Edmonton) Mass Effect 3. The chance to create a new IP in the gaming industry does not come so often. So when EA was given this opportunity, it had to be taken seriously. We discussed what might be interesting - for example, I always wanted a game that I could play with my two sons. And I know a lot of BioWare employees have a similar situation. So this is our chance to create a game that we can play with our families.
- There are already quite a few reviews expressing opinions about the future game. Do you listen to them?
- Of course, this simply cannot be avoided. The gaming industry is very emotional, there are a lot of fans sharing their opinions - we collect them, study them and try to take them into account.
Where do you find inspiration for creating such multi-level, detailed worlds?
- Often in our own experience. You know, some of our employees moved to Canada, became immigrants - their stories were reflected in the game, as well as the stories of representatives of other groups. Designers, writers, artists - everyone wants to bring to the game what they have admired or experienced themselves.
- Will there be any references in the game to Edmonton, where the studio is located?
- This is a big game, so I suspect such hints may appear there by the end of the project.
- What do you like the most about the game?
- Cooperative - we are already happy to play it with colleagues and members of the development team. This is a wonderful experience, many people like this game mode nowadays. And we're glad we have the opportunity to tell a story that has co-op elements.
- When will it finally be possible to play?
- In the fall of 2018. Not so soon, but there are still many tasks, the staff in both Edmonton and Austin are working hard. We are also looking forward to it.
And the day before, Patrick Söderlund, EA's vice president, talked about the game on Xbox Live. According to him, thanks to new technologies and a talented team, they managed to create an open world with detail that was previously possible only in closed locations. And he hasn't seen any open world game like Anthem.
"This is a social game in which you and your friends complete quests and travel together. We have been working on it for the last 4 years and it will be the beginning of what I believe will be a decade of travel for us."
Of course, it is too early to say if the game can survive that long (including possible DLCs and sequels), but the developers are clearly optimistic.
