HL2 really is more shifted to the grinder. But Episode one was again thus. The atmosphere there felt - hoo.
And about the question, what is considered ambiance. I believe that atmosphere is an abstract concept. What you want, then under it and podruzamevaet, within certain limits, of course...
The atmosphere is when you feel the game world, every blade of grass, every character and every event.

HL 2, Max Payne 2 in terms of atmosphere, I remember Call of Duty: United Offensive.
Although, to be honest the atmosphere is a good book for me felt goooooooooooood stronger :)
