Immersive Sim: truth or fiction?
Hello! Weekday evening, hammock studio, burning question. Immersive sim, what are you ??? Some say it is the most elite gaming genre. Others argue that this is just a marketing invention. Still others think that this is a certain approach to game design. We only know that the whole truth about immersive sims will become clear only in this topic.
Sensational discussion! Right now in front of your eyes! ..
After reading all the links and looking at the vidos, I come to the conclusion that the immersive pig is what in the era of the development of three-dimensional graphics games were called, into which various elements of interaction with the outside world were stuck. Like now I don't just run and shoot forward along the corridor, but now I run and shoot along different corridors in order to loot my own food and clothes. From which follows my personal conclusion that such a "genre" as a concept became obsolete at about the same time, because later it all appeared in all other games. The TES series is a good example of this.

immersive sim is not a genre, but a degree of immersion
this is the level of game design and development of the world
it is fire in the eyes and love for what you do
this is what distinguishes real games from kints and Howard's handicrafts
Jordan. No, that's what I wrote about. Otherwise, all elaborate games with atmosphere and immersion can be called immersive sons.
PPC is a wretched word when I write it I feel as if my iPhone from big and black turns into small and pink with rhinestones

Shenmue fits your description perfectly. But for some reason no one calls him that.

Modified on September 22nd, 2017 by Jordan.Considering the very concept of genre (a general concept that reflects the most essential properties and connections of the phenomena of the art world, the totality of the formal and substantial features of the work), then, of course, yes, IS is a separate genre. In general, it is worth distinguishing between the concept of the IS genre and the term itself. These are two different things. The controversy mainly revolves around the term as such. The explanation is simple - although the term is old, but due to the small number of representatives of the genre, it is rarely used, therefore it has not yet eaten into the subcortex. The same survival horror or hack'n'slash (which arose at about the same time) or, God forbid, adventure, do not cause any attacks of acute rejection, although there is an absolutely identical situation.
It is difficult to name a genre. On the other hand, I don't know what it has to do with, for example, the witcher and RPG. I am not allowed to play anyone, I am the default witcher and that's it. Moreover, even such a banality as a full-fledged change of weapons is not available.
I am writing this for those who, with a clever look, are trying to literally translate names / meanings. And the "action" genre is when Donkey Kong = Tekken.
IS is rather a direction, an approach to, with a number of prerequisites / conventions. For example, first-person gameplay.
It's a good question, the problem is that this is more of a set of conditions than a genre, but it is difficult to imagine the game in a very different form from the existing Immersive Sim games, which is why there is a feeling that this is a separate genre / subgenre
Dividing games into genres makes little sense. RPG elements have already been pushed into Doom, but this does not make it your ImmersiveSim. And with what fright did Masquerade become this very immersive? All his life he was called an RPG.
In general, there is the concept of "Metroidvania", which means any game that has gameplay elements from Metroid and afterSymphonic Castlevania. It's the same story with the games "Soulslike" or "Soulsbourne", Froms added certain gameplay elements to the action-RPG formula and clones of a similar structure appeared, prime examples are Lords of the Fallen and the recent The Surge. Immersive sim can become a kind of description of games similar to Bioshock and System Shock, first of all there is a great freedom of the player's self-expression through the gameplay, the problem is that people who make the difference between passing a positive character without superpowers and focusing on melee and, for example, absolute the reptile throwing lightning and fireballs to the right and to the left will simply not see. Should you blame such people? I don’t think people are different and there are different opinions. However, each passage of Deus or the recent Pray can be quite unique to itself, each person from the first passage will have their own experience and their own decisions, both in the plot and in the gameplay. This freedom, or at least its illusion, makes each "immersive sim" a unique experience and blows the minds of many. Thanks to this, many "immersive sims" have a huge potential in replayability; after the first playthrough, a person will immediately want to see what will change if you start playing completely differently? Choose implants for armor or stealth? To pump in the abilities of the aliens or not? Am I going to be engaged in shooting or swing psi-abilities? Spare your little sister or bang her for the sake of maximum profit? It was these features that prompted various smart people to find their name for this concept. Only "immersive sim" sounds pretentious. Here is "Metroidvania", but the game is similar to both Metroid and the Night Symphony, "Soulslike", but it seems the game is similar to the Souls. What is "immersive sim"? What kind of "Microsoft Flight Simulator"? I had the same problem with the concept of "Character Action Game", which they began to sculpt on the DMK and Bayonetta, but at least there it is understandable that the emphasis on the main character and his development is going on, but with the same success you can mix a bunch of other things there. The concept of "Immersive sim" should be replaced with something simple, such as "DeusShock", although let's leave that to more creative people than me. What is "immersive sim"? Calling something like that a new genre is also difficult, Yubiks have long had their own formula for action games, does this mean that they have invented a new genre? It seems to me not. The Souls also brought little new, they just successfully used existing mechanics and mixed them, but they could just as well be called "Metroidanias".
So no, "Immersive Sim" is not a genre, it is a shooter in which you collect all sorts of crap to then kill all sorts of crap and learn all sorts of crap, however the sequence and variability of collecting, killing and recognizing depends on the player. You can kill shit with a wrench, you can shoot shit at shit, and you can also blow up shit with the power of thought, for example, well, or not do this shit at all and dig and hide in the shit from shit guards / aliens / drug addicts.

Not in the first person
Lex Mercer Wow, that changes a lot. You play this in Fallout 4 in 3-person mode And he turns from an immersive son into an ordinary joker with pumping, you switch back - and again the game changes the genre to an immersive son
stalls
When you play Thief 3 from a third-person perspective, the game also immediately changed the genre from immersive son to a regular stealth action.
GTA5 on ps4 and xbox vana is a son of meersiv, because there is a 1-person mode and on ps360 there was a pissing action adventure game
In general, what can I say - lalka
